Viewers will be surprised by my character in TV serial: Ashish Vidyarthi
National
Award-winning actor Ashish Vidyarthi boasts of acting in about 200
films in multiple languages including Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and
Telugu, and is returning to the small screen after two decades. He has
no qualms about featuring in a TV show as he believes that irrespective
of the medium, actors are always on the lookout for challenging roles.
Ashish will be seen playing the main antagonist Roshan Sherchan, a drug lord, in the upcoming finite TV series "24: Season 2".
Asked if he would like to do more fiction shows on the small screen, the actor, who has featured in the 1990s TV shows like "Dastaan" and "Kurukshetra", told IANS here: "Nothing is off the table... never for an actor. An actor is continuously looking for challenges. If I look at myself, I started from 'Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin', then went on to do commercial films like 'Bichhoo' and then I went down south.
"The exciting part is the journey of an actor. Each destination in my life is something that I celebrate. Depending on the genre that I get, I try my best to be honest to that genre," added the actor, often associated with negative characters.
The audience often loathes actors who play baddies. Did he ever get such hatred from the viewers?
"I have been dealing with that for the past 24 years. But it's the love of audience that encourages you to try out better things each time and I feel elated that I have the opportunity to work across so many languages.
"And after years of cinema, I am coming back to TV and doing this show ('24'); so it is special for me and the audience will be surprised by my character," he said.
Praising the Indian adaptation of the popular American TV show that will see actor-producer Anil Kapoor returning as Anti-Terrorism Squad agent Jai Singh Rathore, Ashish said: "We are creating something which we are proud of and the audience will relate to it. There is a whole lot of Indianisation of the script and topic. This could work in any part of the world.
"There is clarity in terms of the way it's written. There is no repetition. There are wonderful lines to speak and my character is not unreal or larger than life."
Is the audience ready to accept shows with a fresh content and not the usual family dramas?
"I believe people who do this work, will keep doing it and won't give up. There will be things that the audience will like and there will be things they won't like. We are working hard so that they love this work," he said.
"We have to ready them (the audience) and move them in such a way that we relentlessly offer them that 'this is available'. I personally don't believe in waiting for things to change. I'd rather be a catalyst to that and this ('24') is a part of that entire effort," he added.
"24: Season 2", which also stars Sakshi Tanwar, Surveen Chawla, Sikander, Harsh Chhaya, Neil Bhoopalam, Sapna Pabbi and Sudhanshu Pandey, will be aired on Colors from July 17 onwards.

'24' most taxing assignment of my career: Anil Kapoor
Actor-producer Anil Kapoor is set to fire bullets, throw punches at the bad guys and engage in stunts in the upcoming TV show "24: Season 2".
The 59-year-old, who has been in the film industry for almost four
decades, says the Indian adaptation of the popular American TV show is
the most taxing project for him so far.
Anil will return as Anti-Terrorism Squad agent Jai Singh Rathore in the second season of the espionage thriller, which will go on air on Colors from July 17 onwards.
"'24' is the most taxing assignment of my career. Doing a movie is much easier as it's just one movie. This is like eight movies... Eight action films together. That's the difference," Anil told IANS here after the launch of the action-packed trailer of "24: Season 2".
Talking about the stunts in the show, the "Mr. India" star said: "My body is all bruised. I had to go to a physiotherapist as well. In fact, some of the stuntmen also got injured, but everyone is fit to work relentlessly."
The first season of "24", which also had veteran actors like Shabana Azmi and Anupam Kher, was launched in India in 2013. It's an official adaptation brought to India by Anil, who even worked in the international version of the show.
Isn't he worried that people will lose interest in the show due to such a gap in the seasons?
"When we do this kind of a show, there is a lot of recall value. When you put in so much of effort and commitment, and the content is so strong... Even if it comes out once in two years, people will remember it and will want it back. There are so many sequels to films. They don't come every year. Still people go to see the films.
"'24' is more like a film. We shoot it like a film. The scale and the kind of commitment we have, are no less than a film. When you do this kind of work, it doesn't have to come out every year," said the "Welcome Back" actor.
The content of the finite series was greatly praised by the small screen viewers, but when it comes to other fiction shows with a different storyline, they don't always get a warm welcome. Isn't the audience ready for TV shows beyond 'saas-bahu' dramas?
"They are ready, but we have to give it (shows with different content) again and again. Whatever you do, takes time. I always believe in doing things that challenge me and motivate me... Which I feel passionate about.
"I felt challenged by the show ('24'). I loved the content. I don't care what others think. There's no time for that," said the global star, who refused to take up "an exciting international project" due to his commitment to "24".
The actor, who has featured in Hollywood projects including "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol", has also acquired the rights of American TV series "Modern Family" and "Prison Break" for Indian TV.
"I just like the way they (people in the West) work, their work culture. The content is strong. There is discipline, professionalism... And that's what I love about them. So whatever is good, why can't I pick it up and learn from them and adapt them," he shared when asked about adapting international shows.
And how different are the two film industries?
"Their budgets are big and technically they are much more advanced where special effects are concerned. For instance, a Disney film like 'The Jungle Book'... everything was done on a computer. Besides, they prep a lot. We (Indian film industry) are also picking up," he said.

Shoot of '24' season two to start soon
It’s time for Anil Kapoor’s TV show "24" to return! Actor-producer Anil Kapoor, who was busy with his film commitments, will start shooting for its second season from October, according to a source.
“Anil took a break from movies to do the first season of '24'. Likewise, he had to take a break from television to complete his two movie assignments - Zoya Akhtar’s 'Dil Dhadakne Do' and Anees Bazmi’s 'Welcome Back'. That done, he is all set to begin shooting '24' again," said the source.
The pre-production for "24" season two has been on for months.
Anil, 57, made his television debut with the Indian adaptation of the hit international TV series "24", which was aired on Colors channel.
The espionage drama "24" showed ATU chief Jai Singh's (played by Anil Kapoor) journey as he races against time to save Prime Ministerial candidate Aditya Singhania (Neil Bhoopalam) from assassination.
Actors like Anupam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Tisca Chopra, Anita Raj and Mandira Bedi too were part of the show, which was co-produced by Anil Kapoor Film Co and Ramesh Deo Productions, directed by Abhinay Deo and adapted by Rensil D'Silva.

The game-changing serial 24
is all set to go into Season 2 on Colors. Yup, it’s time for Anil
Kapoor to don the producer’s hat once again, even if it is to be done at
the cost of his film offers.
Apparently Anil has 6 major film offers this year. But he is tempted to again give priority to 24.
Confirming his full-throttle plans for Season 2 of 24 Anil says, “My entire team is into pre-production. Only my own dates need to be worked out. I am in a bit of a fix.”
Last year Anil said no to all movie offers to focus on 24. This year the movie offers have piled up. But Anil is in the mood for Season 2 of 24.
Confesses the director, “There’s quite a number of tempting film offers. But I haven’t said yes to them as yet. I need to work out my dates for Season 2 of 24. That’s a commitment I’ve made to myself. As a movie actor I’ve seen and done it all. Television is a new medium for me. And it’s very exciting.”
So would Anil end up doing no films in 2014?
“I am already doing Anees Bazmi’s Welcome Back. So I’ve a major film coming up this year. As for more movies, they would depend on how much time Season 2 of 24 would need. You see, the first season was tougher, what with the entire machinery and logistics of television being new to me. A lot of the production hassles would be automatically lessened this time,” reveals Anil excitedly.
The one thing that one is most certainly going to see in Season 2 of 24 is the core cast of Anil Kapoor, Tisca Chopra and Mandira Bedi.
Rishi Kapoor and Jeetendra are likely to join the cast.
“Let’s see how it goes. I am even more excited about Season 2,” reveals Anil who took a few days off this week to attend his brother Sanjay Kapoor’s brother-in-law’s wedding.
